We invite you to take part in a special Climate Allies meeting on Wednesday, August 5 from 10:00-11:30am. We’ll hear from local experts on how California successfully implemented strong, statewide environmental legislation, and how we can utilize these learnings to meet our climate goals in Oregon. The meeting will take place at the OEC offices and in place of our regular Climate Allies gathering (we’ll send out a cancellation notice for our regularly scheduled meeting.) Dial-in information will be provided for those who cannot attend in person. The meeting will be led by:
- Parin Shah, Senior Strategist, Asian Pacific Environmental Network
- Derek Walker, Associate Vice President, US Climate and Energy Program, Environmental Defense Fund
Biographical information on the two presenters is below. Please RSVP if you can attend either in person or over the phone.
- Parin Shah: Prior to APEN, Parin was with Green For All where he worked with cities and counties on equity and environmental policy. In 2004, he founded the Urban Accords Institute, which in 2005 co-hosted the UN World Environment Day in San Francisco out of which was developed the Urban Environmental Accords-a road map for creating green cities. From 2000-04 as the President of the Commission on the Environment for the City and County of San Francisco, he co-authored ground-breaking legislation on climate change, environmental justice, wetlands conservation & restoration, zero waste, green buildings and food security. Parin has also developed and managed habitat restoration projects, horticultural education and job-training programs for formerly incarcerated youth and adults in San Francisco. He began his community work in Tunisia as a Peace Corps Volunteer where he led community development projects, taught, and supported the organization of a local women’s weaving cooperative.
- Derek Walker: Previously, Derek was Director of EDF’s California Climate Initiative and Deputy Director of EDF’s States Climate Program. In that role, he managed EDF’s engagement in the implementation of California’s Global Warming Solutions Act (AB32) and helped lead successful campaigns to pass statewide greenhouse gas policies in New Jersey and Connecticut and to strengthen the Western Climate Initiative (WCI) regional cap-and-trade program. He has testified on climate change legislation before several state legislatures and state and federal regulatory bodies. Derek’s areas of expertise include climate change, California climate and energy policy, energy efficiency and reducing emissions from deforestation/forest degradation.
